Baldur’s Gate 3 is Larian Studios’ follow-up to Divinity: Original Sin 2, and that means Larian was able to carry over and develop many lessons learned from the Divinity games. One of them concerns combat encounters. Divinity: Original Sin 2 was already atypical as an RPG because it completely abandons the genre convention of filling up playtime with grindy combat with trash mobs. Instead, encounters were limited in number, all of them challenging, and all of them indispensable for the loot and experience that you’d get as a reward.

Baldur’s Gate 3 carries over that design philosophy, and builds on it in surprisingly intricate ways. Not only is combat always challenging and rewarding; it’s also full of role playing opportunities, skill checks, and interesting ways to exploit the environment to your advantage. It really feels like a DM is hand-crafting each encounter, in a way that I have never seen equalled by any other RPG.
