On May 24th, 1941, the battlecruiser HMS Hood, one of the most famous ships in the Royal Navy, was sunk by the German battleship Bismarck in the Battle of the Denmark Strait.
The Hood, which was considered to be one of the most powerful ships in the world at the time, was no match for the Bismarck’s superior firepower.
The Hood was hit by several shells, causing a massive explosion that ripped the ship apart.
Out of a crew of 1,418, only three men survived the sinking.
The loss of the Hood was a major blow to the British Navy and a significant victory for the Germans.
It also marked the beginning of a massive air and sea hunt for the Bismarck.
