/”Don’t Call Him Spuder/”? Oh yeah? Just try and stop me!

Boss #1: Spider
HP: 31
Defense: 0

Attacks:
-Bite (4 damage to a single party member)
-Web Cling (Changes to a non-grounded enemy)
-Poison Spit (4 damage poison to a party member, targets two random party members when Spider is under half health)
-Poison Breath (3 damage poison to all party members)
-Summon (Summons an Inichas and Jellyshroom; used once Spider is under half health and only once. Spider will break out of status effects to use this move )

Now onto the first real boss (not counting the scripted fights, which I skipped over. Maybe I should’ve recorded those if I recorded Maki, but eh). If the regular enemies leading up to him haven’t taught you how Hardest mode rolls, Spuder definitely will. Even with his reduced health compared to Normal/Hard, the increased damage on his attacks gives him a real shot at giving you a game over. I definitely had a hairy time here.

That being said, a lot of his difficulty comes from your lack of options more than anything (the medals shown are, to my knowledge, the only medals you can have up until this point, and you’re at the mercy of random drops when it comes to getting healing items). Since the amount of preparation you can do is limited, a lot of it’s going to come down to how well you time your action commands and blocks.

All things considered, he’s not too tricky when he’s above half health. I recommend having Vi be your main damage dealer; Spuder lacks a weakness to any particular attack (not counting being knocked down by Vi’s attacks when he’s clinging to the ceiling), and Tornado Toss is probably your most damaging skill at this early stage (particularly if you move Vi to the front of the formation for the extra point of damage). Kabbu and Leif are best off sticking to their normal attacks, though if damage control is a concern you can have Kabbu taunt (personally I prefer having the DPS), and you can use Icefall to fish for freezes.

Things get a little harder when he’s under half health and summons the Inichas and Jellyshroom. Not only will their attacks add to the damage you’re taking, his poison spit starts hitting two party members instead of just one. I also believe he starts using his Poison Breath under half health as well, though don’t quote me on that. If you haven’t been going all out before this point, now’s the time. If you haven’t been using Leif’s Icefall already, now would be a good time to try for both the AoE damage and to keep fishing for freezes. Any freezes you get give you that much more breathing room.

If you keep up the pressure and time your action commands and blocks right, it shouldn’t be too long before he falls and Chapter 1’s over and done with. If it takes you a couple tries…well, keep at it. You’ll get there eventually.

Bug Fables is a 2019 turn-based RPG created by Moonsprout Games and published by DANGEN Entertainment. It is heavily inspired by the original two Paper Mario games (Paper Mario 64 and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year door) and can be seen as a spiritual successor to them, although it has plenty of quirks of its own.

Check it out here!: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1082710/Bug_Fables_The_Everlasting_Sapling/

This playthrough was done on Hardest Mode. This isn’t quite the same thing as using the Hard Mode medal, although that’s part of it. HARDEST is one of the menu codes uncovered by doing certain things in the game, which serve as mutators when entered into the naming screen when creating a new file.

From the Bug Fables wiki (https://bugfables.fandom.com/wiki/Menu_Codes):
-The game is permanently in Hard Mode.
-Wearing the Hard Mode medal turns Team Snakemouth into Pibu.
-All enemies have 15% more HP and deal 1 more damage.
-After defeating Chapter 2’s boss: all enemies deal 1 more damage.
-After starting Chapter 4: all enemies have 1 more defense.
-Members of a certain lategame optional boss team have 1 additional point of damage and defense.

Many thanks to the Bug Fables Discord for helping me make sure the information here is accurate.
