Epoch getting some stylish wings last time means we can travel just about anywhere in any era. There’s just a couple more things to do in this era though.

First up, there’s a Nu in one of the huts selling some things. Before the Blackbird, it was just consumables. Now though, it has every 4 magic boosting weapon available, including two we didn’t have access to before, Crono’s Star Sword and a Hurricane Scythe. That last’s one a new weapon type (and yes, Robo can equip scythes)…and we’re going to find out who’s the primary wielder of those scythes right now.

If you decide to go back to the Commons and chat with some people, a couple mention a mysterious individual at the North Cape located to the northwest. Going to investigate that reveals who this person is…none other than Magus.

Magus mentions he used to live in Zeal, but under a different alias. A flashback showing the Mammon Machine summoning forth Lavos while the three gurus were in attendance results in them getting time gate’d to different eras.

As for Janus? He came wandering in at the wrong time and also got time gate’d. He got warped to…600 AD, right into the loving care of one very familiar Ozzie. Yes, that means Janus is in fact the Magus we know all too well and just so happens to be the prophet that was by Queen Zeal’s side.

Magus doesn’t hold back either with mocking Crono’s deletion from the game, causing your party members to show various levels of anger. You then get the option to fight Magus.

As it stands, fighting Magus would do no good. Crono’s gone and killing Magus wouldn’t help bring him back. The team refuses to fight him and begins to leave. As they do, Magus walks up and wants to join the party, stating that there might be a way to bring back Crono and Gaspar, the Guru of Time, may just have the solution.

Magus is the final party member to join and, true to his character, goes all in with being a magical machine of destruction. He has tier 2 spells in fire, ice, and lightning. All useful, but this hack also has him start out with his fourth tech, Dark Bomb, to give him command of all four elements.

Failing magic, he’s got decent enough physical power to not be entirely useless against certain enemies that counter like mad against AoEs. He could use a better weapon though. Luckily, the next dungeon we’ll be going to will provide him with one.

Besides all that, his starting armor & helm have no extra effects, but have a bit more defense than a Lode Vest & Helm. His Amulet though is very very nice, making him immune to all negative status ailments.

While this would be the end of the video…what would have happened if the team decided to fight Magus once more? The bonus clip shows this off with a little bonus tossed in.

If you bring Frog with you to chat with Magus, he wants to go 1 vs 1 if you decide to fight him. That is exactly what happens here.

Magus isn’t too crazy at first. Just a bunch of weak physicals. After taking enough damage though, he starts using tier 2 spells that hit Frog for 120-150 damage at 52 magic defense. He can also use these spells as counters, meaning Frog needs to keep his hp high to ensure he can tank two spells per turn at a bare minimum. 450 hp or so is the safe level of hp to ensure Frog can survive at least two magic spells that he doesn’t mitigate. Other than that, just attack when you don’t need to pop a Full Tonic and Magus will eventually fall.

Magus disappears for good, but still mentions Gaspar being able to help before going away…and leaves his Amulet behind with a sad tune played when you pick it up.

More next time!
