In Chrono Trigger for the SNES, it’s possible to unequip a character’s helmet and/or armor, which oddly enough, makes them very powerful in certain ways. Here’s how to perform the Unequip Glitch.

In this example, my party order consisted of Crono, Lucca, and Frog and they were listed this way from top to bottom in my menu screen. Then, I placed my cursor over Crono’s accessory slot, and hit Up and R button at the same time. This caused the game to scroll down to the next character (Lucca) and the cursor was pointing to her armor slot. However, the left side of the screen displayed a list of accessories to equip. So, when I went to equip a new piece of armor, the game allowed me to replace her current armor with nothing, essentially removing her armor entirely. Note that this WOULD NOT have worked if I had any other additional pieces of armor in my inventory.

Then, I performed the same maneuver with her helmet slot. So, I placed the cursor on Crono’s armor slot, and hit Up and R button. Then, I was able to perform the same glitch on Lucca’s helmet slot. Now, Lucca had no helmet or armor equipped, which, for some reason, gave her some insane benefits.

If a character has an unequipped helmet or armor slot, that character gains 10 Magic points. Having them both unequipped grants that character 20 Magic points. Furthermore, having a helmet or armor slot unequipped grants that character 80% resistance to Lightning, Shadow, and Water attacks. Having both slots unequipped grants 90% resistance to Lightning, Shadow, and Water attacks instead. Just note that your physical defense will be pretty bad.

This trick can be used by hitting Down and L button or Up and R button at the same time, and will work as long as you are scrolling to a character that is listed adjacently in the menu. This trick will not work if you /”wrap/” from the bottom character to the top character in the menu, or from top to bottom.
