Spain has been buffed and updated significantly in Civilization 6 thanks to the April 2021 major balancing patch update that was free to all players.
In this video I cover why spain is pretty dang strong – one of the best and most fun civs to play in my opinion. I think @thespiffingbrit could have a lot of fun exploiting this one for insane faith and gold yields (fueling a military Spanish Inquisition, or a religious vicotry – the choice is yours. I’ll cover:
-What the New Spain does, and how it has changed since the last patch
-Spain’s unique ability, unit (conquistador) and tile improvement (the mission)
-My strategy for spain, including serious trade routes and a meaty religion
-Which wildcard policies and cultural policies you should choose

More about Spain:
The Spanish people represent a civilization in Civilization VI. They are led by Philip II, under whom their default colors are red and yellow.
The Spanish civilization ability is Treasure Fleet, which allows them to form their naval units into Fleets and Armadas after discovering Mercantilism, increases the Gold Gold, Faith Faith, and Production Production yields of their Trade Route Trade Routes (with tripled yield bonuses for intercontinental routes), and provides cities founded on a continent other than their original Capital Capital’s continent 25% extra Production Production towards District Districts and a free Builder. Their unique unit is the Conquistador (which replaces the Musketman), and their unique tile improvement is the Mission.

The Mission provides the Spanish with Faith Faith, Science Science, and an incentive to expand to other continents. Found as many cities as possible on continents far from your Capital Capital, then build Campuses in them, surround them with Missions, and enjoy the rich spiritual and scientific benefits! As of Gathering Storm, adjacent Holy Sites to a Mission gives a 1 Science Science boost.
In Rise and Fall, Spain’s civilization ability provides intercontinental cities with 2 Loyalty per turn if they have a Mission next to their City Center.
