I was just crazy enough to try this…

Definitely not a perfect run by any stretch, but then again, not exactly…terrible? (will let you watch and be the judge – no spoilers!)

Route knowledge coming out of Food Factory was very lacking so unfortunately I faltered with the boiler pressure and speed management. I also realise I was very reactive on the damper and firing in the beginning given the changes in grades, due to said lack of route knowledge – also: a result of me wanting to run the most economical fire as possible to save coal and water as I was still working out the consumption of the engine and wanted to keep on the ‘safe side’ and not run out of said coal/water. I almost ran out of coal by the time I had reached Iron Ore Mine West…and we were VERY close to running out of water…

Towards middle/end of the run I was more familiar with the route so like to think I did a little bit better.

Summary provided in video, but to be frank, I could have used a few more notches on the damper (open it more) to keep the boiler pressure higher, especially in the beginning. And the run out of Iron Ore Mine West I did let the boiler pressure slip exceedingly low before I picked-up on it (I blame ‘sleep deprivation’….) 😛

All that said, the limited range of this locomotive makes runs like this quite a risky proposition, especially if running at high energy consumption rates and with heavy haulage loads.

NOTE: this is not meant to be a speed run! This is more about making the trip successfully with *reasonable economy* and without ‘issues’.

Moral of the story: if you see a water tower, FILL UP!
