Dwarf Fortress: Every embark category explained (Steam Version)
GENERAL RULES:
I don’t bring most items made out of wood, because they cost 10 points or more. Wood logs are 3 points apiece, so you can just bring wood instead, or cut down trees after you embark and make the items for free at a carpenter’s workshop.

For items made out of cloth, always choose cave spider silk or yarn, since giant cave spider silk or plant cloth is much more expensive.
For items that people don’t use that often like glass, that sometimes are required in strange moods, you can request them and buy them from caravans later on, just to have some around.
These moodable items that can be requested in strange moods but you might not have around are:
Shell
Any type of glass
All 3 types of thread
All 3 types of cloth
So you can request them from caravans (the human caravan being fantastic for plant textiles and leather), and in the case of shells you can just fish until you catch pond turtles or other shell-bearing animals, then process the fish, store the shells and forbid them until they are needed.

SHOULD YOU BRING…?
Leather: Don’t
Plant/Yarn/Silk Cloth: Don’t (maybe 1-2 units of each, for strange moods. You can also buy it later from caravans)

Metal bars: Don’t
Small cut gems: Don’t
Large cut gems: Don’t
Stone blocks: Don’t. Maybe 2-3 to make your first few workshops, if you are lazy like me

Digging implements: Yes, one, or ideally two copper picks (or the cheapest picks you have access to)

Toys: Don’t
Instruments: Don’t
Drinks: Yes. 20-30 units of each type of drink 1 (so instead of 20 drinks, bring 21. That way you make it so that you get one /”free/” barrel – one barrel is given to you for every 5 units of drink. 20 drinks 4 barrels, 21 drinks 5 barrels)
