Things to note:

The Barbarian weapons
The weapons attack speed(s)
Block animations
Swing animations
And there abilities

The best way to counter a Barbarian is to play the class to understand it the most.

Typically the swing animations are slow (especially with the heavier hitting weapons)

What players typically do is this:

Run in, bait the weapon swing, move backwards, move in and attack, also get hit.

By moving away once they swing, you lose those crucial seconds and milliseconds of getting in, getting a hit or two off, then running away.

By understanding the distance, you can stop, keep the perfect distance, move in and attack and get out safetly. In the barbarians attack they could also move forward to prevent this. However, this is much slower and easy to spot.

Ideally you want to bait them to swing, either stop so it doesnt hit you, or time it so that you move in 1 full motion, and be in range to attack them just as the swing animation is done. This gives you plenty of time to get a few hits in.

If you choose to commit fully once your in, swing close and around there body making it much harder for them to hit you. Think of it as if your a roallercoaster running around them in circles, and maybe add in some extra spice of double back loops so you dont have a predictable movement pattern.

These fights don’t have to be won in 1 exchange. Barbs move slow, open doors slow, and heal slow, you can take advantage of your bleeds and poisons, and take them out in multiple engagements.
