As you probably know, and this is a bit of an understatement, but Immortals Fenyx Rising, Ubisoft’s latest third person open world adventure, is shaping up to be a lot like Breath of the Wild. But after playing the game for a solid four hours, I can say that whatever games Fenyx Rising mimics, I believe it will succeed on its own merits. In fact, it’s now one of my most anticipated games of the fall. This world seems tailor made for gamers who love exploration, who love to solve puzzles, and who want to lose themselves in an environment that piques your curiosity at every turn. I want to thank Ubisoft for the Opportunity, but for now I hope you’ll join me as I look at 15 things I discovered while playing four hours of Immortals Fenyx Rising.

THE WORLD GIVES HYRULE A RUN FOR ITS MONEY
Fenyx Rising takes place on a fantastical island filled with legendary characters and creatures as well as mythological locations. To match the larger than life stories the game tells, Ubisfoft has traded realism for a highly stylized aesthetic. But don’t let the cartoony look fool you. This world is stunning. You could compare it to Breath of the Wild, but I found it to be more vibrant, with features and locations that are more exaggerated, and in my opinion, more intriguing. That’s right. At first glance, I found this world to be more inviting than Hyrule. Perhaps it’s my fascination with Greek mythology, but even so, take this giant statue. Seeing it from a distance, I knew I had to explore it, and once I got there, it was even larger than I anticipated, and just climbing it was an absolute joy. And when I reached one of the game’s many vistas, it became clear that these types of epic and mysterious locations and landmarks are everywhere.

THE MAP IS BIG BUT NOT OVERWHELMING
As for the map itself, it’s made up of seven different regions, each themed after a different Greek God. The one I spent the most time exploring was called The Valley of the Eternal Spring and it was themed after Aphrodite. As such it was bright, full of life, and featured plenty of lush greenery and active wildlife. The other area I explored was themed after I believe Hermes, and was much darker and foreboding. It still featured some color, but all the trees were completely lifeless. Now, each area did feel big – everything you see here is in Aphrodite’s area alone, but when you look at the world map and zoom all the way out, it doesn’t feel nearly as gigantic as say, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Plus, being able to glide anywhere, a-la Breath of the Wild, makes getting around not only manageable, but a lot of fun. One final detail about the map is that, to reveal each area, you have to find the giant statue of that area’s respective god, climb to the top, and then scout the region. This is similar to synchronizing areas in Assassin’s Creed, but from what I could tell, it did not reveal points of interest. That’s left up to the player through one of the game’s other, shall we say, Zelda-esque mechanics.

ZELDA VISION ACTIVATED
Fenix, the hero of Fenix Rising, has an ability called farsight. But make no mistake, this ability is taken straight from Breath of the Wild. You can survey the map and zoom in and out to find your next destination. Find one of these small glimmers, and you can press a button to reveal a point of interest. From what I saw, these can range from a particular resource you can harvest – which can be used for one of the game’s many upgrades, I’ll get to those in a bit, or points of interest might mark one of the game’s many world activities. Plus, you can drop custom pins if you want to mark particular locations that you don’t want to to forget. Even if this mechanic is taken straight from Zelda, I certainly don’t mind. It was during my first look at the world through this sort of binocular vision that I realized just how much this world has to offer.
