Traditional “Shunga” erotic prints require the highest level of expertise to reprint of all Edo Period Ukiyo-e prints. Under the guidance of Monta Hayakawa from the International Research Center for Japanese Studies, we’ve selected three of these special prints. The prints were created by one of Japan’s most famous artists, Katsushika Hokusai, who is most well known for his 36 Views of Mt. Fuji. His erotic “Shunga” prints are said to have had a significant effect on Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet during the wave of Japonism that spread across Europe in the late 19th Century. Expert painters, engravers and carpenters carry on the traditions of the Edo Period today, recreating the prints for today’s audiences.
