Look Up! A Comet is Here

A comet not seen in 50,000 years will make its closest approach to Earth this year. The green comet named C/2022 E3 was discovered in 2022 by the Zwicky Transient Facility. It’s an Oort Cloud object with an orbital period of 50,000 years. This means when the comet last flew past the Earth, Neanderthals were still walking the planet in the Stone Age.

The comet will make its closest approach to Earth on 1 February 2023.
