The Gengar sprite (bottom row) is supposed to be Krookodile.

I was looking through my folder of ROMhacks to see if I have a certain hack. You’ll know what hack that is in another video. A hint, it starts with an M. I noticed Mega Moemon FireRed in the folder and it gave me the idea to do another run of this. I played it two times before, with the last run being done in 2020, in the /”Before Radical Red/” times. That run was a Normal Monotype, only nature that the next run was another Monotype one. Ground was randomly selected. At first, it was slim pickings as the only Ground-type you can get before Brock is Nincada. That proved to be just fine with Brock, an indication of how easy this hack is.

The main gimmick of the hack is in the title itself. There are Moemon sprites and Mega Evolution. It’s pretty much the most advanced Moemon hack, as most of the rest of them are just sprite replacement ones. This one at least has some trainer edits, though the AI is seemingly unchanged from vanilla FRLG. I don’t know how many Pokemon are in this hack, I know it has to be over 386 because almost all the Gen 1-3 Pokemon are in this hack. On top of that, a lot of Gen 4-6 Pokemon. I’m not sure of Gen 7, definitely no Gen 8, though G-Ponyta and G-Rapidash are apparently in this. The roster of mons here is based on what Moemon sprites are available. Presumably, more mons will be added when more Moemon sprites are made and approved.

Krookodile might’ve been a new addition since my last playthrough. I’m singling out Krookodile because it’s kind of the MVP of the run, solo sweeping and racking up KOs with the Moxie ability. I don’t know if it’s ever been covered by a Poketuber or some expert on Pokemon main series games, but Moxie is fucking busted when going up against the vanilla games’ AI. Krookodile might be the best of that ilk based on good Speed, great Attack, and amazing STAB and coverage. Krookodile pretty much made up for my underleveled team against the first-round E4 teams.

The level curve is higher than vanilla FRLG, to a point where it might seem intimidating. Lorelei’s Weavile is level 49, Blue’s ace, in this case Mega Venusaur, is level 70. Yeah, that is scary on paper, but the truth is, it’s very easy. Bad AI, bad movesets (seemingly based on level-up moves), and access to some good mons on my end just makes for a smooth time. A proper difficulty hack would punish me for having 2 Dragon/Grounds and 2 Poison/Grounds. Too much overlap, too many similar movesets, very little variety as everyone’s pretty much offensive. Nidoqueen did serve as my Stealth Rock setter, and it’s a Calm nature, but it’s still pretty offensive.

Shown briefly in the Erika rematch is the existence of new areas. The 2nd Erika battle took place in Clear Forest, accessible through Route 15. There’s other areas, a sea-based one, and a cave one called Lost Murk. Deep in that area is an interesting puzzle you have to solve to access Regirock. I don’t know if Regice and Registeel are available.

My choice in mons was mostly based on what’s available and what I like. I didn’t feel like adding the Geodude family, most of the rest make up some of the first available Ground-types. I was particularly attached to the hack early on, just stampeding bitches until I took a hard stop in Rock Tunnel, trying to find the right Gible. That took hours, I blame myself for that. I was more open to compromise in this run with using neutral nature mons. Gible though, I really wanted Adamant or Jolly. It’s a 5% encounter in Rock Tunnel, so yeah, that took a long time. After that, it was back to stampeding bitches. Take out the Gible search, this run likely would’ve been done within 1 full day. I didn’t really grind and just went in with underleveled Pokemon a few times. For the E4 rematches, I did resort to a Rare Candy cheat, just to get everyone to level 65. I was still underleveled, as Blue’s ace, Mega Venusaur, was level 78, and that Weavile was level 64. You have a smaller range of levels, but still run into the likelyhood of being underleveled.

Mega Evolution’s a bit fucked in this hack. The AI has their Megas already in those forms, technically not taking a turn to Mega Evolve. You can’t Mega Evolve in Double battles. The hack’s kind of old, probably started on when Mega Evolution was freshly implemented to ROMhacks. Not all of them are even available. If Mega Garchomp or Steelix was in the hack, I would’ve gone for a more obvious sand team. Weather abilities have permanent effects in this hack, and Hippowdon’s in this game.

I had a good time, plus I thought of a few hacks to play right after this. Nice to have things planned, not aching to find an idea on what to play.

No sets, but images of the team should help.

The music’s from Unbound, the updated OST dropped recently, so I’m taking advantage of that.
