I made this powerful bow and arrows using only natural materials in less than a day. This skill might save your life some day. Bow is 51 inches long. The stave was cut from a white oak tree (Quercus alba) using a knife. Limbs were shaped, carved and tapered all with same knife, bow is wider at handle and narrows as it approaches tips. The handle is about 5 inches long about 1 inch by 1 inch in thickness. The string was made from 4 thin long continuous strips of pre-stretched animal rawhide. The strips were cut from a large hide by cutting all along the edge which produces long curled strips. I then stretched them until they were mostly straight and then put them in warm water to make pliable. I then twisted them all into one strong cordage, hung it with weight to stretch it even more while it dried. This produced a very strong bowstring of perfect diameter. Arrows were made from a variety of woods from poplar to redbud tree and were fletched with found wild turkey feathers. The feather was cut into sections to make better use of limited materials, no glue was used only animal sinew to bind them to shaft. Notch in one end for string and carved to a point on other. The point was fire hardened for only a short period of time, shafts were straightened with heat and held perfectly. I then took the bow out into the woods for field practice and at ranges from 5 -20 yds could hit just about everything I shot at. The arrows with only fire hardened tips stuck in or blasted through stumps, with minimal damage to the arrows. The bow or bowstring has not showed any weakness even after several hundred shots. These if made properly can still shoot very fast. A short bow is easier to find straight clean material for including string, and straight shoots for arrows. A shorter bow is easier to pack and move through and hunt in thick cover. With a crown shape to the back of the bow, leaving the back alone and wide pyramid type limbs of a flat bow you are sure to have success. The whole process is a lot easier than you think I encourage all to give it a try. This skill is beneficial to all and will never let you down.
