Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksii Danilov has confirmed that many Russians are preparing to fight against the Kremlin’s regime in a special battalion within the Ukrainian Army.
“Indeed, there are many Russian representatives, Russian minorities who are categorically opposed to the Putin regime and they are helping us in this fight,” he said.
According to Danilov, Ukraine expects to form more battalions comprised of Russian fighters in its armed forces.
Earlier, Bloomberg reported Ukraine’s military formed the Siberia battalion of soldiers made up entirely of Russian citizens who want to fight against President Vladimir Putin’s invasion.
Russians in the Siberia battalion underwent thorough security checks to verify they were supporters of Ukraine then signed a military contract and adopted army call signs to protect their identities.
Andriy Yusov, a representative of the Defense Ministry’s Main Intelligence Directorate said that The Ukrainian Armed Forces has created a battalion, made up entirely of Russian citizens. “We can confirm the information about the creation of the Siberian battalion, which operates in the ranks of the International Legion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine”, he added.
Yusov said that this is only the beginning and Ukraine will continue to recruit Russian citizens to similar battalions.
“Ukraine will continue to expand the number of such units, which consist of the peoples of the Russian Federation and express a desire to defend Ukraine on the one hand, and on the other hand, to protect their peoples and small homelands from Russian imperial oppression,” Yusov said.
