Each stage will spawn you at the start with your goal being to reach the final door to move forward. Your health, bombs, and ropes are a limited resource but can be replenished. Ropes can be thrown both upward and downward, as well as thrown while in the air. Bombs can be dropped, thrown, or /”cooked/” like a grenade and thrown at hard to reach places. Bombs by default clear two spaces in all directions in a square around them.
Clear obstacles and defeat enemies by landing on top of them, whipping them with your attack, or hitting them with any number of projectiles. Your derpy companion will be randomly placed in the level and can take quite the beating before dying. Once picked up, your companion will run forward if you set them down again and will often find itself in trouble.
If you can get it to the door alive it will grant you 1 HP on your way to the next stage. You can also cook turkeys with bombs or fire to get 1 HP as well. If you prefer you can charm these turkey friends and ride them instead. Traps will be strewn across stages, and you’ll figure out how they work as you go along. Note that later worlds have more mechanics and enemy’s to learn so be prepared to learn while under fire.
Spikes will impale anyone who falls on them from above, but you can walk through them from the sides. You will find keys that unlock doors and chests if you carry them there. Currency is earned through collecting gold and precious gemstones. You will encounter many ways to spend your money, like shops for example. This will give you upgrades to your jump or stomp, grant you weapons, and tools like a jetpack or teleporter.
If you disagree with a shopkeeper’s prices you can simply kill them and take the items yourself, but it will make you an enemy to shopkeepers for that run. You can even pick up and use what you find in the shop to take them out. Traversing the cave system becomes increasingly creative as you get comfortable with the movement and the items. Check above or below you by holding up or down respectively. If you take too long on a single stage a spooky ghost will come to kill you.
You’ll find a spooky pot on every level that contains a highly valuable diamond inside, but once broken the spooky ghost will come after you immediately. You can carry the pot to the final door before you break it if you want to play it safe.
Any creature that can be carried can be sacrified on altars for mysterious benefits. You can sacrifice your derpy companion as well to gain a free item and crushing guilt for what you’ve done.
Spelunky is infamous for being positively brutal in the ways it can kill you. But after you figure out the obstacles and enemies it can be viewed as a series of puzzles to solve. And that does it for Spelunky 2.
