This week on Sunday Longplay, the Road to Metroid Dread continues with another ROM hack of my favorite video game of all time! Welcome to Super Metroid Ascent!
This hack is a complete overhaul of Super Metroid, with a completely new map, new music, new color palettes, new visuals, new everything! There is a heavy focus on puzzles in this hack, and the overall difficulty of this hack is harder than the base game, which is good to give a fresh challenge for people who have played the original Super Metroid to death without going completely overboard with it like some of the Kaizo SM hacks I’ve seen @Oatsngoats play!
In this game, Samus is on a mission to exterminate a set of dark parasites that space pirates are conducting experiments on by placing 3 bombs, one in each zone of the planet. When you plant the bomb and blow up a zone, that zone will be closed off behind you, so make sure you grab everything before facing the bosses!
In order to get 100% of the items, you will need to know some of the advanced techniques of the game, like machballing, short-charging the Shinespark, etc. In the end, the environments and the gameplay create one of the greatest, if not the greatest, Super Metroid ROM hack ever created!
