Super Metroid Tutorial – The Golden Torizo Code
In this video, I explain how to execute the Golden Torizo Code (or GT Code), which is a leftover debugging feature from Super Metroid’s development that wasn’t discovered until over a decade and a half after the game’s release. To be clear, the GT Code is *NOT* a glitch. I presume that many of my viewers already know about the GT Code, but I wanted to make this for anyone that hasn’t heard of it yet, because it’s very interesting and relevant to some speedrunning categories (plus, it’s where my username comes from). I also explain how to use the GT code to achieve a 135% item collection rate, which is the maximum possible, assuming you don’t use major glitches (such as the Spacetime Beam).

Check out this video by MrGuyAverage if you need some help with the 0 E-Tank Phantoon fight: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/351589490.

Personally, my favorite strategy for the Phantoon fight (it’s not fast, but it is relatively easy and consistent) is as follows: Collect (and have equipped) Charge Wave Spazer. When Phantoon opens his eye, hit him with 2 consecutive charged shots, followed by a Super Missile. You can see me do this at 6:31. This sequence will deal 1,020 damage, and Phantoon has 2,500 health total. Repeat this sequence twice, and he’ll only have 460 health left. So, for the third round, you can hit him with 3 consecutive charge shots, or 2 charge shots followed by a regular Missile, and you’re done. Note that when you hit Phantoon with a Super Missile (that doesn’t kill him), he’ll become “enraged” and spew flames from the top of the room for awhile (see 6:37). Fortunately, you can perform pseudo-Screw Attacks (by performing a spinjump while holding a charged shot) to avoid taking damage from the flames, which I demonstrate in the video.

If you need help with the Green Gate Glitch, check out this page on the Super Metroid Speedrun Wiki: https://wiki.supermetroid.run/Gate_Glitch. Here’s one particularly helpful quote: “To perform the [green] gate glitch, Samus must first stand a couple of pixels to the right of the gate while facing left, and have [Super Missiles] selected. Jump while holding angle up, then move left and press shot right before her head hits the ceiling (while still holding jump and angle up).” The page also contains helpful links.

Finally, here’s the link to Zoast’s “Max% GT Code” speedrun, which was previously (up until literally the day this video was uploaded) the world record: https://www.youtube.com/watch?viG5LHROkkVg. It’s definitely worth a watch. 🙂 And congrats to Ruyarin for getting the current world record!! Additionally, there are other speedrunning categories that utilize the GT Code, such as GT Classic, Any% GT Code, and 100% GT Code.

Thanks so much, everyone! Let me know if you have any questions/comments/feedback. 🙂
