The role of the CDM has changed countless times, and has slowly become on of the most crucial positions in the team. While Route One football in the late 90’s limited the holding midfielder’s role to defensive tasks, the modern meta of high press possession football has seen the CDM become one of the most important positions on the pitch, involved with the buildup and required to break the opposition lines.
