In a long list of favorite painters, Nicholai Fechin is surely at the top. The way he breaks down form and light with harsh alla prima application is pure magic. His still lifes are equally pleasurable. If you get a chance to see them you’ll know what I mean. When you stand far away the everything reads as a finished piece, but the closer you get your realize how broken the strokes are and how much is abstracted.
