In x4 foundations, you can set up your pilot behavior to auto explore, but your captain must have a skill at the list with 3 stars. The biggest problem to use this setting is that it’s too slow and also sometimes it explore more than we need to see because in reality the sector is way bigger than we can see it in beginning and the map will adapt automatically if you cross its margin.
In case your pilot is not enough skilled you can set the captain behavior to explore anyway by right click in the center of the map and select explore with the sip selected.
