Yōko Mihara – Flirting is Survival

Watching Teruo Ishii’s ‘Sexy Line’ a week or two ago, I was taken with the incredible and joyful charm of the actress Yōko Mihara. In this film she plays a pickpocket, unashamed of being both a pickpocket and a sensation seeker. Teruo Yoshida plays the tormented chap who, for the sake of loving thrills and handsome men, she decides to help in his quest to clear his name as a possible murderer.

Mihara was in a lot of films directed by Teruo Ishii, in each of them, she seemed to have a dance number. These numbers always seemed to present us with a more seriously sexy persona unlike the jokier heroines she played. This period of Japanese genre cinema seemed to carry influences from both European and American films but in the thrillers there was an edge that went a little further than either European or American films.

Mihara went on to play older roles, further and further down the cast list and that may be why she retired from the business a long time before she had to (as far as I know). She died in July, 2013, at the age of 80.
