Virizion returned to legendary raid at the end of season of adventure go round.

Virizion has an exclusive moves – Sacred Sword. With Sacred Sword, Virizion can cut through a lot opponents in GBL. However, there is a little problem. In this raid rotation, Virizion would not come with Sacred Sword and one have to use an Elite Charged TM for it. It is unfortunate that Niantic has once again turn off the exclusive moves in subsequent raid rotation after their initial release.

Virizion is a Grass/Fighting type Pokémon. It is single weak against Poison/Fire/Psychic/Ice/Fairy type moves and double weak against Mega Rayquaza. Well, or double weak to Flying-type.

Virizion as a raid boss has 163 attack and 192 defense. As a raid boss, Virizion learns Double Kick/Zen Headbutt/Quick Attack as fast moves and Close Combat/Leaf Blade/Stone Edge as charged moves. While it has a high defense stats even compared with other Tier 5 raid boss, it can be defeated as Solo Raid without weather boost damage bonus, solely because it is doubly weak against Dragon Ascent Mega Rayquaza.

Outside of Mega Rayquaza, these are the counters which can outrace the timer against Virizion as a Solo Raid without weather boost:

Yes, Mega Rayquaza is the only option that can outrace the timer and single-handedly made Virizion Solo Raid possible without weather boost damage bonus.

Under Windy weather, Rayquaza, Shadow Moltres and Shadow Staraptor can also outrace the timer against Virizion as a Solo Raid. However, using only Mega Rayquaza remains one of the best choice to attempt the Solo Raid, even when Virizion is using Stone Edge. Unfortunately, there is not much option for Virizion Solo Raid. In terms of Duo Raid, someone achieved it with teams of Lv30s Unfezant, which should be sufficient to show how comfortable it is.

Only Mega Rayquaza is used this time against Zen Headbutt/Leaf Blade Virizion is Sunny weather, which means Virizion’s Leaf Blade receives weather boost damage bonus while none of Mega Rayquaza’s moves were boosted.

Since Leaf Blade is doubly resisted by Mega Rayquaza, and it being a 3-bar move with early damage window, Mega Rayquaza would prefer tanking Leaf Blade instead of dodging it in general. Dodging are only applied to allow Mega Rayquaza achieve consistent survival time as well as utilizing its HP better for extra energy from damage.

Overall, it is a relatively luck dependent raid where the Leaf Blade frequency and timing from Virizion can determine the outcome of the raid. As shown in the execution, there are some misplay like using Hyper Potion which does not fully heal Mega Rayquaza and unable to register the Dragon Ascent before fainting around 60 sec in raid timer. However, the generally favorable Leaf Blade timing and below average Leaf Blade frequency saved the sub-optimal execution.

Pokémon used:
CP 6535 Mega Rayquaza – Lv501 15/15/15 Air Slash/Dragon Ascent
